ARTICLE: PACKING TIPS (MOST COMMON PACKING MISTAKES)
Shipments endure a lot movement and handling so proper packing is a must. A package's journey from sender to recipient hits a lot of bumps in the road literally.
Packages are handled from a dozen to nearly one hundred times, they ride on planes, trains, and automobiles, and move through various sorting equipment before arriving at their final destination.
If you’d like your shipment to reach its recipient looking its best, be sure to avoid these common mistakes.
A) Packing hollow or fragile items loosely
- Pack items tightly with packing peanuts or other packing material.
- Items will be shaken and vibrated throughout their journey, proper packing reduces an items susceptibility to damage.
B) Not filling hollow items with packing material
- Hollow items should be packed tightly inside to absorb any shocks.
- As with any shipment, to absorb shock packing materials should be placed tightly around items to minimize movement in the box.
- When shipping multiple items in the same box, be sure to use packing material to separate items and tightly pack each individual item.
- This prevents items from rubbing or knocking into each other during transit.
D) Overlooking fragile details
- Edges and corners of picture frames and books require more than bubble wrap.
- Wrap the items in bubble wrap, then use packing essential to further cushion in the box.
E) Dropping and Compression
- Packages with fall, and often from heights of 6 feet or more.
- The exterior box needs to be able to hold up to the impact and be sealed sufficiently to prevent the package from opening.
- Quality cushion materials will absorb any additional stresses that would otherwise collide with your products.
What to do:
- Use a heavy duty cardboard box:
- For larger or heavier packages: two layer cardboard is recommended.
- Better check the weight and crush limits for the box you are using, included with the box certificate on the bottom flap of the box.
- For small and light weight shipments: keep in mind that the packages is not shipping in isolation.
- If a heavier package is placed on top, the box needs to be able to support that item too.
- Light weight and solid packing materials, such as packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and inflatables, provide protection without unnecessarily raising shipping costs.
- If you have to force contents into the box or the sides are bulging, it’s over packed.
Apply strong adhesive tape
- Seal the box closed with quality tape to prevent the box from opening. Use at least three pieces of 2’ tape, in an H pattern.
- From heavy packages, if you are unsure that tape alone is sufficient, use bands for added protection.
