Being trapped in a confined elevator is everyone’s worst nightmare. You’re hanging stories above the ground and your only lifeline is the emergency call button in front of you. Getting stuck in an elevator is a major fear for many people, with small spaces causing anxiety. Though this is very rare, it’s not completely out of the question to get stuck in a lift so if you find yourself in these situations it’s useful to know exactly what to do. 1) STAY CALM
When you get stuck in any kind of small space it can be nerve-wracking, especially if you have a phobia. However, it’s important that you try to stay as calm as possible so you can get help as quickly as you can. You will need to talk to the operator clearly, so take a few deep breaths, calm yourself down and await assistance.
2) PRESS THE ALARM BUTTON
The emergency button is there for a reason, so if you find yourself stuck in a lift you should raise the alarm. Once you press the alarm, you will be connected to an emergency operator who is on hand 24/7 to help anyone who is stuck in the lift.
3) FIND A LIGHT SOLUTION
If the elevator lights are out, you’ve probably already turned on your phone light or used a keychain light to see. Be careful not to drain your phone’s battery. Use the flashlight to see the elevator buttons and count how many people are in the elevator.
4) PRESS THE CALL BUTTON
Use your flashlight to find the “call” button, usually marked with the image of a phone. Pressing it will contact a technician to come and help you. It will also alert the maintenance staff that there is a problem with the elevator. If you successfully connect with a maintenance technician, they will be on their way.
